Many people jump into affiliate marketing, with every hope to make money only to have their dreams dashed against the rocks in the months to come.
The fact is we underestimate what it means by “no get rich quick scheme”. As I work at my own affiliate business, the truth of what it means to be patient while ploughing in unceasingly struck me and it hit me hard. Guess I’m not alone in this.
My first two months were quiet. So quiet that I can only hear the keyboard as I furiously type away, creating what I hope to be the greatest blog post that will inspire millions to flock over. Yeah, I think I crossed the line with that one.
Well, it’s no spoiler that nothing of that magnitude took place though there has been a constant increase (albeit slow) in viewership.
I learnt my first lesson and welcome to the reality of any online business you may be embarking on. For me, it’s affiliate marketing and I thought it would be hard but not this hard.
All these setbacks set me thinking about what to do next. I look into ways to drive more traffic. Words like social media marketing, SEO, social engagement pop up constantly. I subscribed to various newsletters, hoping to find the holy grail of affiliate marketing. I also unsubscribed from many newsletter when I begin to realise I’m not reading any of them but just deleting them. Lesson learnt: Learn from others but don’t be too distracted. We all got 24 hours, just like anyone.
Overwhelmed and slightly out of breath, I consulted a few entrepreneurs who already conquered these obstacles. And here’s one universal truth I re-learned and I bet you already knew it if you have any working experience especially for sales. The art of selling lies in the desire to serve. Serve your customers genuinely, help them with their problems and you will see them rewarding you in ways you cannot imagine. That’s what my manager taught me 13 years ago, and it catapulted my career thereafter.
I have been in sales for over the last decade and I know that is so true. In the online world, it is no different. In fact, it can sometimes be even more difficult because you are not facing your customer. With words and probably why video content took off like a rocket, the main thing is to let others know who you are as a person and that you are here for them in that particular niche. If you are not doing that, you may still get away with an occasional sale here and there but it won’t be substantial nor will it be satisfying.
Don’t you think so?
