April was such a hectic month that I realised I only contributed one article to my blog.
Yes, only one! In fact, it was the most dismal month in terms of content creation and I was expecting a drop in viewership. Well, it did happen and I am not going to deny it.
However, what caught me by surprise was the referral made during that period of online absence.
One day, I woke up to receive the following congratulatory email.
For me, this really came as a surprise because I was really LOW on content for the entire April. In fact, I didn’t expect anything to happen, much less a successful referral.
I want to share how I DID it and if you are currently struggling to make money online, this is for you.
Your Past Efforts Count
If you are new on the journey of online business, there may be days or even weeks, months when you are wondering where all this is leading to.
At times, you may even be tempted to throw in the towel. I did and I will be honest about it.
However, if there is anything I want to share, it is this: Don’t write off your past efforts. Every piece of content you published will contribute to your SUCCESS. That’s a guarantee but what’s not guaranteed is the timing.
I had my first online sale at the third month. Someone signed up for a screencasting product (Screencast-o-Matic) which I reviewed. While it did not convert into cash for me, I was given a 20% discount for my own Screencast-o-Matic subscription. In the subsequent months, my review gathered in 2 more referrals and my overall discount went up to 60%!
Not bad for a review but more importantly, it was a product I enjoyed using and my readers benefitted from the review I provided.
I am looking forward to getting 2 more referrals which would then put me in that sweet spot of using the Pro Recorder for FREE!
Keep Producing Quality Content For Your Target Audience
The difficulty of an online business is finding that FIRST customer.
Most of us started out pumped up and all but when the going gets tough, it is not surprising to find people giving up halfway or sometimes just 3 feet away from gold!
April was the month when I was most tempted to just let it drop. After all, at the peak of my performance, I was generating quality blog posts at an average of one per day. However, I wasn’t getting even a referral nor sale.
What more then can I expect from my worst month?
As it turns out, I was proven wrong.
Our past efforts do count and therefore don’t stop producing content for your target audience.
Two things I learnt from my past mistakes.
#1 Producing content randomly will get you random results. When I first started my website, I was blogging about anything that comes to mind. I believe it will work because I can reach out to people from all walks of life and interest. I may be right but results proved that I was reaching out to a broad base but wasn’t getting any traction.
Imagine a different scenario. You are writing to a targeted audience and while the base is narrower, you are attracting people who are genuinely interested in your niche. They are at your site because they crave the specific content you are publishing.
What are the chances they will engage more deeply with your content and buy into your ideas, reviews and recommendations? Definitely much HIGHER!
#2 Do not compromise on content quality. Quality means different things to everyone. You should define your own and be consistent on it. Do not sway because someone says you should write short-form articles because people’s attention span is short and won’t make it past a 500-word blog post.
Go for long-form articles if that’s your style because like what I mentioned in point 1, like-minded people (target audience) will find you and stay with you.
Don’t be a crowd pleaser. Usually it doesn’t work well. I like to mention a professional trader by the name of Jason Stapleton. Jason used to lead a trading enrichment program known as Trade Empowered and he also has a podcast to his name. The guy is passionate about his works (READ: super opinionated) and frankly, not everyone can take his style well but he has a sizeable following.
Because people who enjoy his style of content will flock to him and for those who don’t, they just stay away!
I am not suggesting you start producing content that is offensive. The key is to have your own opinion, even if it’s about the same thing.
April 2018 will go down in my diary as a very memorable month.
It proves to me that hard work is never lost and every effort goes into contributing towards your future SUCCESS.
Therefore, do not lose heart and call it quits when the going gets tough. An online business is less capital intensive than any brick and mortar business but like any business endeavour, it takes effort and time. There would be days where you feel you are just writing for JUST you and yourself but believe me, it’s not going to stay that way if you keep producing quality articles.
I hope my mini milestone helps to encourage those of you on the fence to take the step forward and to those who are maybe thinking this is not working out for you after weeks and months, I urge you to go that extra mile. You are just 3 feet from gold.
Your business may take every remaining ounce of energy from you especially if you are also working 9 to 5. However, the rewards of having your online business running 24/7 when you could not, is simply priceless. So GO for it!
